Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage. If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product, move the carriage to the left side of the product. If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product. If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the product, move the carriage to the right side of the product. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the product, and then to the right side. Close the cartridge access door. Wait until the product is idle and silent before proceeding. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the product, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the icon on the cartridge matches the icon on the slot. The printer software opens. In the printer software, click Estimated Ink Levels, and the toolbox window opens. The HP Toolbox opens a graphic that shows the estimated ink levels for your printer. If the estimated ink levels are low, and you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, replace the cartridges. Continue to the next solution. Solution two Replace the problem cartridge Follow these steps in the order given to replace the cartridges. If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to Printer and Page Yield Overview, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies. Step 1 Replace the cartridge Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue. Load plain white paper into the input tray. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue. If the left Ink Level icon is blinking, there is an issue with the tri-color cartridge. If the right Ink Level icon is blinking, there is an issue with the black cartridge. Solutions Use the following solutions to solve a problem with the cartridges. Solution one Check cartridge compatibility and installation Follow these steps to make sure that the cartridges are compatible with your printer. Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if the power is not already on. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before proceeding. Refer to the list of cartridge numbers in the HP Sure Supply window. If either of the cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list. Solution two Remove, inspect, and clean the problem cartridge Follow these steps in the order given to clean the electrical contacts. note If both cartridge lights are blinking, complete the steps for both cartridges. Gather the following items Distilled water use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges coffee filters work well Open the cartridge access door. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge. Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up. Dip a cotton swab into the clean distilled water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp. Clean the cartridge contacts. caution Avoid touching the nozzles. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long. Clean the contacts in the carriage for the problem cartridge. warning Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the printer. Place the cartridge in its slot at a slightly upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position. The tri-color cartridge goes in the slot on the left. Solution three Turn the printer off and then on again Turning off the printer and then turning it on again recalibrates the cartridges. Press the Power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, continue to the next solution. Wait 60 seconds. Press the Power button to turn on the printer. note The printer might go through a warm-up period, which might last several minutes. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue. Solution four Repeat the cartridge cleaning steps If the error message still displays on the printer control panel, repeat the previous steps to clean the cartridges, and then make sure that each cartridge is correctly inserted. Solution five Replace the problem cartridge Step 1 Replace the cartridge Follow these steps to remove the problem cartridge and then insert a new cartridge into the carriage. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue. Load plain white paper into the input tray. Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot. If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution. Solution two Clear any jammed paper Jammed paper can cause the carriage to stall. Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper. Step 1 Remove any loose paper or foreign material from the trays Before you clear a jam from inside the printer, make sure there are no foreign materials in the input or output trays. Press the Power button to turn off the printer. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer. warning You must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the HP printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock. Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray. Look inside the input tray and remove any foreign materials such as paper clips or other objects that might have fallen inside. note You might need a flashlight to illuminate the area. Remove any loose sheets of paper or foreign materials from the output tray. Press the Power button to turn off the product if it is not already off. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product if it is not already disconnected. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product if it is not already disconnected. Turn the product so that you can access its underside base. caution Before turning the product, use your hand to secure the scanner lid. Press in the tabs on either side of the cleanout door to release it. Then open the cleanout door. Figure Remove any jammed paper caution If the paper tears while removing it, check inside the door for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur. Reattach the cleanout door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place. Step 3 Clear any jammed paper from inside the All-in-One Follow these steps to remove any jammed paper from the inside. Press the Power button to turn off the product if it is not already off. Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product if it is not already disconnected. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product if it is not already disconnected. Grasp the jammed paper with both hands and slowly pull it from the front of the product. note If the paper tears while removing it, check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product. Press the Power button to turn on the product. Solution three Make sure that the carriage moves freely Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely. Step 1 Check the carriage path for obstructions Open the cartridge access door and make sure that there are no materials blocking the carriage. Turn on the printer. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer. Unplug the power cord from the power source or electrical outlet. warning You must unplug the power cord to move the carriage by hand and reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of electrical shock. Check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then remove any paper or objects that you find. caution If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If pieces of paper remain in the printer, more paper jams can occur. Reach inside the printer through the cartridge door, and then manually move the carriage. If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer, move the carriage to the left side of the printer. If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer. If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found. Make sure the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the printer, and then to the right side. Close the cartridge access door. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer. Plug the power cord back into the power source or electrical outlet. Turn on the printer. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer. note If the printer prints when plugged directly into a wall outlet, the power strip or surge suppressor might not be allowing enough voltage to reach the printer. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait at least 15 seconds. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet. Reconnect the power cord to the printer. Turn the printer on. If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, you can stop troubleshooting. Solution three Install the printer software Use one of the following methods to install the HP printer software onto your computer. Method one Use the software installation CD. Your All-in-One comes with a CD used to install the printer software. Remove the CD from its packaging, and then insert it into your computer's optical drive. Figure Insert the installation CD Follow the instructions in the installation wizard. Method two Download and install the software from the internet Turn on the printer. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed. If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit. If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change. Under the Driver heading, click Download for the full software package, or click Basic Drivers for other driver options. If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting. If the issue persists, continue to the next solution. Solution four Set your printer as the default printer Follow these steps to select a default printer. Windows Press the Power button to turn the printer on. Click the Start button, if using Windows XP, or the button if using Windows 7 or Vista. Click Devices and Printers. A window opens displaying all the devices currently connected to your computer. Find the printer you wish to set as your default printer. Move your mouse over the name or icon of the selected device. Right click your mouse, and then select Set as Default Printer from the drop down menu. This is now your default printer. Attempt another print job. Mac Press the Power button to turn the printer on. On the desktop, click the Apple icon , and then click System Preferences. Click Print & Scan. The Print & Scan window opens. Select your printer from the Default Printer menu. This is now your default printer. Solution seven Service the All-in-One If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document. Issue The Color ink level icon or the Black ink level icon is empty and blinks normally In this error condition, the following control panel light pattern displays Power light On Attention light Off Color ink level icon Empty gauge or current ink level blinks normally. Black ink level icon Empty gauge or current ink level blinks normally. Ink error indicator Off Media error indicator Off Segment display counter Displays any quantity of copies remaining Figure Control panel with lights indicated Cause The printer is in single cartridge mode the black cartridge or the tri-color cartridge is missing. note During single-cartridge mode, the printer can copy documents, copy photos, and print jobs from the computer. Solution Install the missing cartridge Follow these steps to install a cartridge in the printer. Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers. Step 1 Install the missing cartridge Follow these steps to install a cartridge that has not been installed in the printer yet. Turn on the printer, and open the cartridge access door. Figure Open the cartridge access door The cartridge carriage moves to the center. note If cartridge access door is open longer than five minutes, the cartridge carriage returns to its normal operating position. Using a flashlight if necessary, verify that the black or tri-color cartridge is missing. Install the missing cartridge. Step 2 Align the cartridges Follow the steps to align the cartridges. Lift the scanner lid. Place the alignment page with the print side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. Press the Scan button to begin the scan. The printer automatically aligns the cartridges. One or both of the cartridges may be defective. Solutions Use the following solutions to solve a problem with the cartridges. Solution one Check cartridge compatibility and installation Follow these steps to make sure that the cartridges are compatible with your printer. Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if the power is not already on. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before proceeding. Figure Open the cartridge access door Make sure that the cartridges are in the correct slots. Check the icons on the top of each cartridge. Make sure that they match the icons for the slots they're installed in. The tri-color cartridge goes in the slot on the left. The black cartridge goes in the slot on the right. If the icons do not match, remove the cartridges, and then insert them in the correct slots. If the icons match, continue with these steps. Find the number on the label on the top of each cartridge. Figure Number on the cartridge label Cartridge numbers Make a note of the cartridge number printed on the label of each cartridge, and then close the cartridge access door. Refer to the list of cartridge numbers in the HP Sure Supply window. If either of the cartridge numbers is not in the list, replace the cartridge with a new one that is in the list. Solution two Remove, inspect, and clean the problem cartridge Follow these steps in the order given to clean the electrical contacts. note If both cartridge lights are blinking, complete the steps for both cartridges. Gather the following items Distilled water use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges coffee filters work well Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves into the center of the access area, unless there is an obstruction. Press down on one of the cartridges to release it, and then pull it out from its slot. Figure Remove the cartridge caution Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Figure Do not touch the contacts or nozzles If protective tape is still on the cartridge, remove it. Do not remove the copper-colored strip. Figure Remove the protective tape If you removed the protective tape from the cartridge, there is no need to clean the cartridge. Continue to the step to reinstall the cartridge. Place the cartridge on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up. Dip a cotton swab into the clean distilled water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp. Clean the cartridge contacts. caution Avoid touching the nozzles. Figure Clean the cartridge contacts note Clean the contacts quickly so that the cartridge is not outside the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long. Clean the contacts in the carriage for the problem cartridge. warning Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the printer. Place the cartridge in its slot at a slightly upward angle, and then press up and forward until the cartridge snaps into position. The tri-color cartridge goes in the slot on the left. The black cartridge goes in the slot on the right. Figure Insert the cartridge into its slot Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer. Close the cartridge access door. Figure Close the cartridge access door If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting. If the issue persists, continue to the next solution. Solution three Turn the printer off and then on again Turning off the printer and then turning it on again recalibrates the cartridges. Press the Power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, continue to the next solution. Wait 60 seconds. Press the Power button to turn on the printer. note The printer might go through a warm-up period, which might last several minutes. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue. Solution four Repeat the cartridge cleaning steps If the error message still displays on the printer control panel, repeat the previous steps to clean the cartridges, and then make sure that each cartridge is correctly inserted. Solution five Replace the problem cartridge Step 1 Replace the cartridge Follow these steps to remove the problem cartridge and then insert a new cartridge into the carriage. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue. Load plain white paper into the input tray. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue. Figure Open the cartridge access door note The outside of the printer might not look exactly the same as your printer, but the steps are the same. Lightly press down on the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge out to remove it from its slot. Figure Remove the cartridge caution Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. Figure Do not touch the contacts or nozzles Remove the new cartridge from its packaging, and then pull the pull tab to remove the plastic tape. Figure Remove the plastic tape Hold the cartridge by its sides with the nozzles toward the printer, and then insert the cartridge into its slot. Make sure that the cartridge is inserted in the proper slot. Figure Insert the correct cartridge into the slot Push the cartridge forward into its slot until it snaps into place. Figure Snap the cartridge into place Repeat these steps to replace the other cartridge, if necessary. Close the cartridge access door. Figure Close the cartridge access door Follow any prompts on the screen. Wait about 30 seconds for the alignment page to automatically print. Step 2 Align the cartridge Scanning the alignment page recalibrates the cartridges for best print quality. Lift the scanner lid. Place the alignment page with the print side down on the right-front corner of the scanner glass. See the engraved guide next to the scanner glass for help loading the alignment page. Figure Place the alignment page on the scanner glass Close the scanner lid. Press the Scan button to begin the scan. The printer automatically aligns the cartridges. If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting. If the issue persists, continue to the next solution. Solution six Service the All-in-One If you have completed all the steps and are still experiencing a problem, continue to the Service the All-in-One section at the end of this document. Service the All-in-One Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
